DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today announced that Gene and Ruth Bedwell of Osceola in Warren County are the winners of the June “Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award.”

“The Bedwells are Charolais cattle breeders that take care of their animals, their land, and their neighbors,” said Northey. “Gene and Ruth are dedicated to their livestock and community. They consistently go out of their way to be the best neighbor they can be and deserve this recognition.”

In nominating Gene and Ruth for the award, their neighbor Scott Baker said, “They are on the job constantly caring for their animals and raising feed crops to supply them with…[they] are highly respected by all who know them.”

The Bedwells breed Charolais cattle with a 100+ spring-calving herd on a 650 acre operation. They also raise feed for their livestock. Gene and Ruth have two sons, two daughters, and four grandchildren.

The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award is made possible through the financial support of The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers. WHO Radio’s Big Show will broadcast live from the Bedwell farm on Thursday, June 26. Secretary Bill Northey will present the award to the family during the broadcast.

The award recognizes Iowa livestock producers who care for their operations and their neighbors and is named for Gary Wergin, a former WHO Radio broadcaster who helped create the award.

  -  Our family is extremely honored to have received this award - a BIG thank you goes out to our friends & neighbors!

   Gene,

Just wanted to let you know that B538 had a
nice bull calf this morning, 3/30/07.  The bull
weighed 85-90 lbs, and she had it all by herself.
Robbi and I could not ask for anything more.
We love the Charolais - and their calves do
   tremendous!  Thanks again for everything.

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO OUR CUSTOMERS FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT...

Gene,

PATRIOT Son - just a sample of the quality of yearling bulls we currently have FOR SALE!We sold our calves last week in Denison. They were right off the cow with no vaccinations or implants. Our herd of 92 head averaged 592# after a 200 mile ride. We did creep them this year for the first time and our weaning weights went up 60# per head. Before we started using your bulls our calves averaged only 490# at the same time of year. We had a group of 20 steers that averaged 714# and brought $1.14/pound.
Needless to say, with the high corn market and dropping calf market -
we were very happy! I just wanted to let you know in case you would
ever like a referral.

Thanks again,
Craig Dozark - BDB Cattle Co.
